Should I Buy or Lease?

Should I Buy or Lease a BMW in Riverside? Leasing vs. Financing Explained

Choosing between a lease and a loan is one of the biggest decisions you will make on a new BMW. Both put you in the same car. They just structure the money differently, and they suit different driving habits.

A lease works like a long-term rental. You pay for the portion of the vehicle’s value that depreciates while you drive it, which is why monthly payments are usually lower than a comparable loan. BMW Financial Services lets you set the term length and mileage allowance up front.1

Financing builds equity instead. Your payments go toward the full purchase price, and once the contract is paid you own the car outright, with no mileage restrictions and no limits on how you personalize it. BMW Financial Services offers finance contract terms typically ranging from 24 to 72 months, with 84-month terms available on select vehicles.11

Our finance team can walk you through both. You can start from home with our online credit application, or visit us at 3060 Adams St., Riverside, CA 92504. You can also call 888-713-6529 to ask about current programs.

Leasing vs. Financing at a Glance

The practical differences come down to a handful of things. Everything else is detail.

  Leasing Financing
Monthly payment Usually lower — you pay for depreciation, not the full price Higher for the same vehicle
Ownership and equity None — you are paying to use the car You own it outright once the contract is paid
Mileage You set an annual allowance up front; overage charges apply. BMW does not offer an unlimited-mileage lease1 No mileage restrictions1
Customization Must be returned in original factory configuration5 Personalize it however you like1
Maintenance BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles — most of a typical lease3 Same coverage, then scheduled maintenance is your responsibility
End of term Ask us about your options as your term winds down Keep it, sell it, or trade it in
Depreciation risk BMW carries it You carry it — Kelley Blue Book estimates new vehicles lose about 55 percent of their original value over five years8

How Lease Mileage Limits Work

BMW Financial Services does not offer an unlimited-mileage lease, so the annual allowance you choose when you structure the lease matters.1 Picking the right allowance also keeps your total mileage inside the 4-year/50,000-mile BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.10 Stay in that window and the major mechanical components remain covered by the factory warranty for the full length of the lease.

If you go over, an excess mileage charge is assessed when you return the vehicle. The per-mile rate varies by model and is set in your lease agreement, so check your contract rather than assuming a figure.1

You also have a better option than paying that penalty. BMW’s Mileage Adjustment Program lets you buy additional miles at a discounted rate right up until the day before you turn the car in, through your My BMW account or by calling 800-959-4269.1 The program carries conditions worth knowing in advance: it is available for vehicles with up to 100,000 total miles, there can be no outstanding fees on your account at the time of purchase, and additional miles are offered at the discounted rate within 120 days of your contract end date. If you do not use all of the miles you buy, the unused balance may be credited toward amounts you owe at lease end.5

Higher mileage wears the car faster too, particularly tires, brake rotors, and suspension components. At return, you are responsible for wear beyond normal standards.5 Your commute drives this decision more than anything else. Someone in Moreno Valley running the Interstate 215 corridor every day accumulates miles quickly, and a higher allowance is the safer choice.

What BMW Ultimate Care Covers

Every new BMW arrives with several coverage programs. Three of them do most of the work in a lease-or-loan decision, and it helps to keep them straight — maintenance and repairs are not the same thing, and they run on different clocks.

Program Coverage term What it handles
BMW Ultimate Care 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first3 Factory-scheduled maintenance
New Vehicle Limited Warranty 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first10 Covered repairs from defects in parts or workmanship
BMW Roadside Assistance 4 years, unlimited miles4 Flat tires, breakdowns, lockouts — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 1-800-332-42694

Ultimate Care lines up closely with a three-year lease. Note that many advertised BMW lease terms run 36 or 39 months, so a longer term can extend past the 36,000-mile or three-year limit — worth checking against the term you actually sign.

Ultimate Care covers factory-scheduled items including engine oil service with the oil filter, brake fluid replacement, the vehicle check and inspection, the cabin microfilter, the engine air filter, spark plugs, and the remote control key battery. Each is performed when the vehicle’s Condition Based Service system indicates it is due, as outlined in the vehicle’s maintenance booklet.36

Wear items such as brake pads, rotors, and wiper blades are not part of the standard program.6 If you plan to keep the car well past the factory coverage window, extended maintenance plans such as BMW Ultimate Care+ are available for purchase, subject to eligibility — availability varies by model, vehicles must be enrolled before reaching 60 months or 60,000 miles, and non-US-specification vehicles and vehicles equipped with carbon ceramic brakes are not eligible.6

What Determines Your Monthly Payment

A loan payment and a lease payment are built from different inputs. That single fact explains most of the confusion people run into when they try to compare the two side by side.

What drives the payment On a loan On a lease
Amount being financed The full purchase price Only the depreciation during your term
Vehicle value input Purchase price MSRP, including destination and handling charge, and the residual value set in your contract1
Cost of borrowing APR Money factor9
Term Typically 24 to 72 months, with 84 months available on select vehicles11 Term length you select up front1
Cash up front Down payment lowers the principal and total interest Reduces the amount capitalized; you may also put down up to seven security deposits on a new lease to lower the payment1

Because a lease covers only the depreciation during your term rather than the entire purchase price, lease payments usually come in lower than a comparable loan on the same vehicle. Financing without money down is possible in certain cases, though most drivers make a down payment because it reduces the monthly payment.2

The money factor is written as a small decimal, which makes it awkward to compare against an APR. Multiply it by 2,400 to convert it — a money factor of 0.00200 works out to 4.8 percent.9 Keep one difference in mind when you compare the two: the money factor is applied to the capitalized cost plus the residual value, so the total dollar finance charge on a lease is not directly comparable to loan interest on the same amount.

Money factors, APRs, residual values, terms, and available incentives vary by vehicle, model year, credit qualification, and region, and are subject to change without notice. Your Options at Lease End

As your term winds down, ask us about your options and we will walk you through what fits your situation. BMW Financial Services also runs several programs that are far more useful to know about before you need them than after.

Program What it does When it applies
Mileage Adjustment Program Buy additional miles at a discounted rate1 Up until the day before you turn the vehicle in, subject to program conditions15
BMW Lease-End Protection Covers excess wear-and-use charges such as interior stains, tire wear, chips, dents, and dings, up to the limits stated in the program agreement. Exclusions apply1 Arranged in advance; applied when you return the vehicle
Lease extension Extend your term up to six months past the contract maturity date1 Subject to limitations and eligibility requirements; extension requests through My Account are available in the final two months of the contract term1
BMW Pull-Ahead Program End your current lease early with remaining payments waived when you upgrade to a new BMW1 Eligibility and terms vary and are typically offered on a limited basis1
Disposition fee A lease disposition fee applies at turn-in. It may be waived when you lease or finance your next BMW through BMW Financial Services112 Assessed at lease end; the amount is stated in your lease contract
Early termination Triggers a fee calculated on your remaining payments and the vehicle’s current value1 Any early exit outside the Pull-Ahead Program

Preparing for the lease return inspection

If you want to know where you stand before the official process begins, you can request a pre-inspection at our service center. BMW guidance points to a window of 90 to 120 days before your lease ends, and we recommend coming in at least 90 days out. We will review the condition of the vehicle and give you an estimate of any charges, which leaves real time to address anything that comes up.512 Eligible customers can also complete a pre-inspection digitally, and the results appear in My BMW as a Vehicle Return Estimate.5

A separate independent inspection takes place roughly 60 days before expiration, arranged by an independent inspection company at your convenience.5 Waiting until then leaves much less room to fix wear items before turn-in, so the earlier pre-inspection is the more useful of the two.

Disclaimer. Lease-end program terms, fees, coverage limits, exclusions, eligibility, and availability vary by vehicle, program, and region, and are subject to change without notice. Optional protection products are governed solely by their program agreement or addendum and may not be available in all states. Your signed lease contract governs in all cases. Understanding Total Cost of Ownership

The monthly payment is only part of the picture. What you actually spend over the life of the agreement depends on a handful of costs that never appear in an advertised payment.

Cost component Leasing Financing
Core cost Monthly payments across the term Principal plus interest across the term
Due at signing Drive-off amounts typically include an acquisition fee, your first payment, and applicable taxes and government fees Typically your down payment plus applicable taxes and government fees
Insurance Required throughout the term. BMW Financial Services requires comprehensive and collision coverage in addition to state-minimum liability13 Required throughout the term
Maintenance Largely covered by Ultimate Care for a typical term3 Covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles, then out of pocket3
End of term Potential charges for excess mileage, excess wear, and a disposition fee None — the vehicle is yours
Value recovered None — you return the vehicle Resale or trade-in value, reduced by depreciation87

Tax, title, license, and registration are additional and are not included in advertised payments. Amounts depend on the vehicle and on where it is registered, so the only reliable figure is the one prepared for your specific transaction. Ask our finance team for a full breakdown before you sign.

Depreciation is the largest single cost of owning a vehicle, and it is the cost a lease shifts away from you. Kelley Blue Book estimates that new vehicles lose about 55 percent of their original value over five years,8 and Experian notes that luxury vehicles tend to depreciate more quickly than the market average, partly because of higher starting prices and lower demand for used models.7 Estimates vary by methodology and by model, and that is not an argument for leasing on its own — it is simply the trade you are making when you choose one structure over the other.

Manufacturer incentives and subsidized lease programs can move all of these numbers meaningfully, and they change month to month. Current offers are the fastest way to see what the math actually looks like right now.

Common Questions About BMW Leasing and Financing

Can I purchase additional miles during my BMW lease term?

Yes. BMW’s Mileage Adjustment Program lets you buy extra miles at a discounted rate up until the day before you return the vehicle.1 Conditions apply: the program is available for vehicles with up to 100,000 total miles, your account cannot have outstanding fees, and the discounted rate is offered within 120 days of your contract end date.5 You can purchase miles by calling 800-959-4269 or by signing in to your My BMW account.1

What is the difference between a lease money factor and a loan APR?

The money factor is the lease equivalent of an interest rate, written as a small decimal rather than a percentage. Multiply it by 2,400 to convert it to a comparable annual rate.9 One difference to keep in mind: the money factor is applied to the capitalized cost plus the residual value, so the total dollar finance charge on a lease is not directly comparable to loan interest on the same amount.

Which is better for a long commute, a lease or a loan?

It depends on how many miles you drive. A lease has no unlimited-mileage option, so heavy commuters either size the allowance carefully up front or buy additional miles later through the Mileage Adjustment Program.1 Financing has no mileage restrictions at all,1 which is often the simpler answer for high-mileage drivers.

How should I prepare for a lease return inspection?

Request a pre-inspection at our service center 90 to 120 days before your lease ends.512 That is early enough to address any excess wear before the independent inspection, which happens roughly 60 days before expiration.5 Waiting until the independent inspection leaves much less time to make repairs.

Choosing Your Path

The right answer comes down to how you drive and what you want at the end of the term.

Lease if…

You like being in a new BMW every few years, want a lower monthly payment, and have a predictable commute you can size a mileage allowance around. You would rather hand back the depreciation risk than carry it.

Finance if…

You drive a lot, plan to keep the car five years or more, want to personalize it, and want to build equity you will eventually own outright. Mileage limits and return conditions are not something you want to think about.

Our finance team can run both structures side by side using your actual numbers — the same vehicle, your credit profile, current programs. Visit us at 3060 Adams St., Riverside, CA 92504, or call 888-713-6529 to speak with a finance specialist.
